It is a perfectly normal tarred road, with one lane in either direction, which winds gently up through the pass and down the other side. If the weather is poor, because of wind or rain, or particularly fog, or if there is snow on the path which is more than you are comfortable with, you can cross over very easily back to the tarmac road at this point. And its also where the famous St Bernard dogs were originally bred and trained to rescue those lost in the mountains.
